There are two Theory Plus classes that teach music theory, aural, composition and general musicianship skills, including all the skills and understanding needed to gain grades in music theory. Students from these classes achieve highly in theory examinations with most scoring over 80% and gaining merits or distinctions.
There is a lively feel to the classes which are taught with humour and practical experiences; through group composition and performance projects we explore the different aspects of music and music notation in a more creative and interesting way than simply completing exercises in a workbook. Each student however, does have a workbook and is set individual targets in that book to show what they have learned in the group projects. We also have several weeks where we work in grade specific groups (sometimes with two teachers) and practise the types of questions that occur in the graded theory exams. Students work at their own level and pace with support and encouragement from their teachers to aspire to really understand what they’re doing, not just to cram for an examination.
