This class welcomes all levels and aims to encourage students to experiment with ideas, techniques and subject matter. It is perfect for a beginner or an established watercolour or acrylic painter who needs inspiration. We teach through a variety of methods - drawing, planning, making, copying and looking at other contemporary and traditional artists. We encourage students to explore new ways of looking at a subject and making work from it.
Each student is given a sketch book at the start of the term and is encouraged to begin to collect, write and record inspirational ideas, artists or subject matter. The classes are very flexible and can accommodate ideas and input from the students regarding particular techniques or artists that they wish to look at. There is already an established group using predominately watercolour, but acrylic and gouache are positively encouraged and we will be looking at the different ways we can use these water-based mediums together. Last term we looked at Japanese prints, working from projected slides in the studio, the use of linear marks in Van Gogh, wet on wet techniques and working from the photograph. This term we will continue to explore other artists work, light and tone, techniques and layering, and re-interpreting the subject matter to discover each individual’s unique style.
