Instrumental Tuition for Children & Young People  

Currently some 720 students take a wide variety of weekly instrumental and vocal lessons with around 70 tutors. Students range from beginners to intending professionals and from young children to retired people. Where appropriate, students are prepared for grade examinations, diplomas and performance units of GCSE and A-level Music.

One-to-one lessons at the Conservatoire give you these benefits free of charge:

• Opportunities to take part in workshops, masterclasses and short courses given by eminent visiting musicians

• Advice, coaching and mock examinations from senior staff

• Regular feedback on progress, including a written annual report

• Opportunities to perform as a soloist or in ensembles at Conservatoire concerts

Fanfare (6-11 years) : £105 per term of 11 of 30-minutes sessions. :

Our Fanfare programme is an ideal way for your child to learn to play a musical instrument in small groups, with an experienced Conservatoire tutor.

How to arrange lessons Please complete the enclosed form and return to the Conservatoire with your £15 enrolment fee. There is nothing more to pay now. You will be invoiced for the first term’s fee of £96 once your lessons have been arranged – payment is due before the start of the first lesson.

Please complete and return the form at the top of this page, giving as much information as possible. You will then receive an Enrolment Pack from us, giving details about your teacher and lesson time together with an invoice.

A unique one-year (3 terms) introduction to six instruments for those who are not sure which instrument they would like to learn. Instruments introduced are: violin, cello, guitar, piano, flutes and percussion.

  • a structured course which allows children to progress with confidence

Instrumental Ensembles

The Conservatoire has a range of ensembles for children and young people. For more information, please see our Instrumental Ensembles for Children & Young People leaflet.

Creative Keyboard

For adult students range from a group for beginners to a performance group. Enjoy making music as part of a small group in a relaxed ensemble environment. Your experienced Conservatoire tutor, Chris Wilson will guide you through the basics whilst introducing a range of musical styles and exciting and fun arrangements. Blackheath Baroque Ensemble and Blackheath Baroque Orchestra

The Baroque Ensemble and Orchestra present opportunities for more advanced players to study music written before 1800, and develop their ensemble performance skills. Led by one of the country’s most inspiring teachers, the Conservatoire Ensemble and Orchestra welcomes players in the following instruments: recorders, strings, bassoon, oboe, piano / harpsichord. Both groups perform at internal concerts and also at outside venues.

Chamber Music for Adults

This course is open to adult instrumentalists of approximately Grade 4 standard and above. Players will be matched with others of a similar playing standard to form a number of varied ensembles. Open for enrolment at the beginning of each term.
