The Conservatoire offers music theory and aural classes for all grades.
Key points about all the classes are:

Aural (up to 17years) Saturdays - Morning with Anne Howard : £34 for 4 sessions :

Grade 1 - 09.30-09.30am
Grades 2-3 - 09.30-10.00am
Grade 4 - 10-10.30am
Grade 5 - 10.30-11am

These classes are to complement individual instrumental and vocal lessons leading up to ABRSM Grade examinations. Enrolling in these classes is highly recommended as it not only helps candidates improve results in the aural section of the exam, but also allows instrumental and vocal teachers more time to concentrate on other
aspects and as such helps to ensure a better result overall.

For exam practice for other syllabuses, such as the Trinity Guildhall examinations, please contact the Course Leader who will be happy to advise you.


Music Theory Grades 1-3 Saturdays - 10-11am with Benjamin Rous : £119 for 11 sessions :

Age up to 16yrs

  • All you need for theory and aural Grades 1-3
  • An innovative new class that will teach all the basics of musical understanding in a lively atmosphere
  • Perfect preparation to join the Grade 5 Theory class or for beginning GCSE Music
  • Don’t scramble to get it together at the last minute – get a deeper understanding of music right from the beginning
  • No audition or previous experience necessary to join this class

Music Theory Grades 4-5 Saturdays - 10-11.30am with Phillip Scott : £119 for 7 sessions :

Age up to 18yrs

  • For those graduating from the Grades 1-3 class, having completed Grade 3 theory elsewhere or by consultation
  • Continuing the ethos of the Grades 1-3 class with lively presentation and examples from real music played on CD for discussion and illustration
  • The perfect course for those wanting to gain Grade 5 theory – not just to scrape an uncertain pass but to aim high and to gain a good understanding of how music works
  • Essential preparation for those wanting to move on to Grade 6 practical or to A-level Music

About the tutors
Anne Howard
LRAM ARCM ALCM LTCL FFCM FGCM
Studied piano, clarinet, organ and composition at the Royal Academy of Music in London and continued her piano studies at the Paris Conservatoire. She was director of music at St. George’s Cathedral, Southwark for 10 years. Anne has given organ recitals in many European capitals and composed a vast amount of music including a Rock Opera and a Requiem. As Director of Music at Sydenham High School, a post she held for 10 years, she organised and performed in numerous concerts as well as finding time to organise orchestra, wind band, jazz band, choirs and many other ensembles. Anne is an experienced examiner and moderator for GCSE music performance and composition and has been working for the London Examinations/Edexcel Board for 15 years.

Benjamin Rous
BMus(Hons)
Studied composition, piano and conducting, at the Royal College of Music and King’s College, London. He also studied Javanese Gamelan music and has performed with Alpha Beta Gamelan and on tour with members of the South Bank Gamelan players and Paris Cité de la Musique. Benjamin has given classes for the Wigmore Hall Education department and for Goldsmiths College’s PGCE course.

Phillip Scott
Has worked for thirty years in a wide variety of music education settings and in 2005 became Principal of the Conservatoire, only the seventh in the 125 years since its foundation. Previously he has led the county music services of Wiltshire and East Sussex and, during the 1980’s he was Head of Woodwind at Wells Cathedral School, one of the four specialist music schools in England. He has developed a reputation since then as a director of several important wind programmes and is currently conductor of the National Youth Wind Ensemble of Great Britain, with whom he made his BBC Proms/ Radio 3 debut in August 2000.
