This Happy Breed by Noel Coward

Directed by Simon Geal

Focusing on the period between the First and Second World War (1919 to 1939) the play delves into the lives of the Gibbons and Mitchell families and their times living in Clapham Common, south west London. By being invited into the Gibbons’ parlour (living room) we become party to the events that shaped their lives and those of Londoners during this tumultuous time in Britain. Coward, himself grew up in this area so knew it well, and provided audiences with an insight into the everyday lives of lower middle-class families. Written in 1939 (when the play finishes) and not performed until 1942, the initial performances were described as ‘a most moving portrait of small people living greatly’.
