Atelier Conservatoire

This course is ideal for those who are working to establish their studio practice and would like space and guidance in order to further progress their work. Structured like a continental atelier, the course allows artists with self–initiated projects (at all stages of development) to explore the creative journey from initial ideas to finished pieces. You will develop your visual research methods, technical experimentation, and critical awareness whilst working towards the completion of your own projects in drawing, painting and mixed media. Evening Life Drawing

Life Drawing

25th April - 18th July (12 weeks, £228 or £26 drop-in) Set in our stunning Victorian art building this course is designed for both beginners, as well as those for whom life drawing is already established in their artistic practice. This course is a wonderful opportunity to explore drawing in a variety of mediums from the live model with tuition and guidance tailored to suit each individual according to their needs. All of this comes together to help you build confidence in line, tone and proportion. Basic materials provided.

Landscape Painting

Landscape Painting

18+, Tuesdays 13.15 - 15.45

19th April - 12th July (12 weeks, £228) Join this new course to develop drawing and painting skills whilst working outside, directly from the local landscape. We will be based in various outdoor locations near Blackheath, including the Naval College and Rangers House. The first sessions will concentrate on drawing and techniques useful for landscape, with a theme addressed each week, such as composition, perspective, proportion, light. Later this will lead into painting techniques and use of colour such as colour mixing, brushwork and washes. Some sessions will take place in the studio to consolidate and extend these projects. We will look at work by painters of landscape and a range of methods will be demonstrated.

How To Draw

Tuesdays 19th April - 12th July (12 weeks, £180) Wednesdays 20th April - 13th July (12 weeks, £180) The course will cover: different drawing materials and their qualities; using charcoal and rubber; drawing with pencil, line and measuring techniques; hatching with a pencil and other ways to shade and create tone; ways to create a feeling of space in landscape and cityscape using perspective, angles and ellipses; drawing the figure: drawing a self–portrait in pencil; using different types of pen and inks and drawing in colour with soft pastels. Suitable for all levels, including beginners. By the end of this course you will feel confident about working at home to develop your own style.

The Evening Studio provides the perfect setting to explore and develop drawing and painting techniques and build a portfolio of your own unique work. Suitable for those drawing or painting for the first time or if you are returning to improve and develop your practice. You will be encouraged to use a variety of media including pencil, graphite, inks, charcoal and pastel, oil pastel, watercolour and acrylic paints.

Improve Your Photography

Improve Your Photography

18+; Fridays 14.00 - 16.00

22 April – 24 June (9 weeks, £153) This nine-week photography course will give you a good grounding in the basics of using your digital camera.  In the first session, you will be taken through how your camera works; including shutter speed, metering and exposure, aperture and depth of field, and getting better results from your flash.   During the course, you will go on to cover formal elements such as;as composition, the basics of perspective, colour and tone. The course will also touch upon giving you an overview of aesthetics and history of photography.    Within each session, there will be a practical assignment to be completed within the class, and there will be a simple homework assignment each week.  The previous week’s homework will be reviewed within the classes, to help you to analyse the images and develop your practical photography skills and techniques. *You will need your own digital SLR camera to take part in this course

Portrait Drawing & Painting

Key techniques will be covered with the aim of developing personal expression and skills under the guidance of a professional portrait painter.
