Machine Sewing for Beginners & Improvers

16+, Tuesdays 18.45 - 20.45

19th April - 10th May (4 weeks, £72) If you have recently purchased a sewing machine or want to refresh your skills, join us to make a simple cushion and either a Japanese-style apron or a pair of pyjama trousers. You will need to bring your sewing machine, a basic sewing kit and sufficient fabric for each project. More information about material requirements and equipment will be sent to you after booking.

Botanical Illustration

Illustrating A Nature Journal

18+, Thursdays 19.00 - 21.00

21st April - 12th May (4 weeks, £72) In this course we will focus on a different medium and different part of the natural world each week, learning how to keep a nature journal. We will study and draw trees, birds, and insects, and build our nature journals from inside the studio. Students are encouraged to bring back collected and found items from walks, to include within their work. It’s a great opportunity to combine connecting with nature and sketch booking in the studio!

Embroidery

Embroidery For Beginners

16+, Tuesdays 18.45 - 20.45

17th May - 14th June (4 weeks, £72) Join us to learn some simple applique skills and easy embroidery stitches. Satin stitch, backstitch, French knots, blanket stitch and stem stitch will all be used to make a contemporary embroidery design which could be framed. A materials/equipment list will be sent to you after booking.

Botanical

Botanical Illustration

18+, Thursdays 19.00 - 21.00

19th May - 16th June (4 weeks, £72) Botanical illustration is a popular and beautiful art and can be found in many places today from scientific journals; cookbooks; magazines; adverts, cards, fabric design and simply as beautiful artwork. In this short course you will be inspired by seasonal flora and fauna to create your own botanical illustrations. You will learn drawing techniques and will explore the use of dip pen and watercolour paints to truly capture your subject in all its glorious colour, shapes and details. We will focus on British flowers and plants and will take inspiration from some well-known botanical illustrators. With thanks to Hortus for providing us with beautiful plants each week.

Patchwork

Hand Stitched Patchwork

16+, Tuesdays 18.45 - 20.45

21st June - 12th July (4 weeks, £72) Learn how to paper-piece a traditional patchwork block which could become a cushion cover or the beginning of a quilt! The method will be English paper piecing and you will learn how to make templates, prepare your fabric and stitch your block. A materials/equipment list will be sent to you after booking.

Illustrate Blackheath

Illustrating Blackheath

18+, Thursdays 19.00 - 21.00

23rd June - 14th July (4 weeks, £72) In this course we’ll be leaving the building to explore Blackheath itself. We will be taking our pens to the streets and heath, finding wonderful spots to draw and sketch as a group. We’ll try different mediums suitable for portable drawings and use techniques to introduce you to sketching in the urban environment. It’s a wonderful way to explore our village and to observe and capture Blackheath life building your confidence to draw in public! We’ll discuss how to take your work back in the studio to create wonderful Blackheath illustrations. Please dress for the Blackheath climate, wear comfy shoes for walking and standing and be ready for an adventure! Come prepared with a sketchbook of your choice.

William Morris 1

Printmaking from Nature: Linocuts inspired by William Morris

18+, Sundays 14.30 - 16.30

12th June - 26th June (3 weeks, £54) Linocut is a relief printmaking technique that involves carving into a linoleum surface using a sharp tool. The linoleum sheet is inked allowing the raised areas to be then printed onto paper. Taking inspiration from the designs of William Morris you will learn how to create a repeated linocut design inspired by natural forms. This class is suitable for beginners.
