A Sad Farewell to Drama

Front 2

The Board has taken the difficult decision to close drama courses at the Conservatoire from September 2025. Closing a programme is not something that trustees undertake lightly, especially for a subject such as drama which has been a much-loved part of Conservatoire life for a very long time. The journey to this decision has taken many months and included a commissioned review of the viability of all Conservatoire programmes in the context of local markets and growing competition. At the forefront of this process has been our thoughts for the tutors, parents and attendees of the various groups that we know have built genuine relationships through the drama courses we have run.

We do believe that drama can be an excellent activity to help build confidence, resilience and communication skills. Unfortunately, the economics of running and growing a community drama programme have become increasingly challenging over the last few years. While we are heartened by the enthusiasm for drama shown by members of our existing groups, the reality is that our drama programmes struggle to grow and we have had to cancel many of our holiday drama courses due to insufficient interest.  While closure of the drama programme has been a very difficult decision to take, the Conservatoire Board has a duty to steward the charity's resources to ensure the success of the organisation going forward.

We very much thank our drama team for their dedication to their students over the years. It is due in no small measure to their enthusiasm and talent that drama at the Conservatoire has been so well loved by learners and audiences alike.
