Bio

Training/Education - Mairéad read Music and English at the University of Birmingham followed by postgraduate vocal studies at Birmingham Conservatoire, University of London, and the Royal College of Music Opera School. She is always learning and continues to build and refresh her knowledge: She has taken levels 1 and 2 of the Estill Model; Mairéad is mentored by one of the world's premier vocal coaches, Paul Farrington, attending his workshops and masterclasses. In the last year she has taken part in workshops on Breath Work; Vocal Health & Anatomy (with Declan Costello); Hormones, Nutrition & Singing and a masterclass given by Sarah Conolly - all courtesy of the London Singers Collective. She was also recently invited to a masterclass for ENO patrons given by Amanda Roocroft.]Career Highlights - Mairéad went straight from the Royal College to Glyndebourne where she performed small roles, covers and chorus. In addition to performing large roles for smaller companies, on the oratorio stage she was soprano soloist for English Concert's international tour of Bach's St Matthew Passion directed by Trevor Pinnock.Teaching Approach - Singers are storytellers as well as athletes. Mairéad's aim is for those who learn with her to sing safely and expressively, getting the best out of their unique instrument. They will build an understanding of how the body works when we sing, as well as how to communicate the words and meaning of a song or aria, combining anatomical knowledge with artistry. She teaches adults and occasionally older teens, preparing them for performances, auditions, advanced exams as well as simply learning for pleasure - in fact always learning for pleasure!Outside the Conservatoire - Mairéad directs several choirs; performs recitals; leads vocal workshops; runs a private teaching practice from home - home is Catford where she enjoys getting involved with community work mainly connected to music and the arts. She also devises and performs shows that combine live classical music and storytelling with fellow musicians Klio Blonz and Grace Mo, performing their unique versions of Alice in Wonderland, Aesop's Fables, The Nutcracker and A Christmas Carol (our latest creation!) across London and the UK. Mairéad is also Artistic Director of Blackheath Conservatoire.
