Tuesday 27th May, 18.00 - 21.00 (£39)

Develop the skills to portray these beautiful early summer blooms in oil paint, with a focus on light and shadow. This beginner-friendly workshop will teach you how to approach the complex form of a peony flower using comparative measurement, careful colour mixing, and painting from life. Guided by your expert tutor Sophie, you will learn how to create a variety of pinks to express the peonies in a life-like way. Sophie will demonstrate and guide you through the colour mixing and painting process. Painting in an ‘alla prima’ technique, you will have a finished painting at the end of the workshop to be really proud of. Materials and equipment are all included but participants are also welcome to bring their own brushes if they would like.

Painting Peonies

Painting Flowers in Watercolour (18+)

Thursday 29th May, 18.00 - 21.00 (£39)

In this returning evening watercolour course your expert tutor Sophie will show you how to work in a loose and spontaneous way, responding to the texture and colours of flowers. Working from photographs of flowers, the group will paint each flower on a larger-than-life scale. There will be an emphasis on being bold with the composition and colour, allowing yourself to work in a free and creative manner. It will suit all abilities and is a good way to work more freely if you feel you are often too cautious in this medium. If you have your own watercolour brushes that you usually use, please bring them along. Brushes will also be provided. Sophie Knight is a member of The Royal Watercolour Society and her work is in the British Museum, the House of Lords, and several high-profile collections. She teaches her watercolour class on Friday afternoons at the Conservatoire.
