Our art classes are one of the jewels in our crown, introducing and developing a wide-range of skills and allowing students to explore their creativity. We have 1 hour, 2 hour, half-day and day-long courses to suit all interests.

Let's Visit the Bahamas! (5-11 yrs)

It's time to explore the bright blue ocean of the Bahamas! Let's visit our underwater friends who are native to the Bahamas, like the nurse shark, the green sea turtle, guppies and groupers and tiny dwarf seahorses. We will be 'painting' our ocean scenes with felt, using thread, needles and other mediums to create our tactile images. Come along to explore this textile medium and all of the inspiration that the ocean gives us.

Groovy Californian Tie Dye (6-12 yrs)

Learn how to tie dye using natural and synthetic dyes, creating groovy patterns and colours. First, we will develop new skills using different tying techniques to create a range of patterns. Then transferring what we’ve learnt onto t-shirts, tote bags and bandanas. Design your own range of Californian inspired tie dye outfits that you can wear and show off this summer!

Let's Travel: Archiving, Collaging & Scrapbooking (5-11 yrs)

Collaging, scrapbooking and monoprinting with archive family photos and holiday pictures, creating a piece documenting your favourite place (or time!). Students will look at old family holiday photos, archive material and magazines to consider how we've spent our free time in the past! Students will use family photos with magazine collage techniques to understand composition, creating a scrapbooked image of their favourite places, times and destinations. From this, students will learn how to create a layered monoprint from their collages. Students will use textured materials to conjure their dream destination/environment and will come away with several outcomes documenting their travel wishes!

The Mexican feast of Día de los Muertos is a beautiful, colourful celebration which spills out into the streets. The Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Festival in Turkey is an annual event held in the Cappadocia region, renowned for its unique "fairy chimney" landscapes. It typically takes place in August, attracting visitors from around the world to experience the spectacle of hot air balloons against the backdrop of Cappadocia's stunning scenery. We'll join in the festival from afar by designing and building our own papier maché hot air balloons! We'll use balloons, paper, card, tissue paper, rope and other materials to create our beautiful mini balloons. You'll be able to take your balloon home to hang in a corner of your home - you can imagine that you are floating in Cappadocia!

Marvellous Maps & Terrific Travel (3-5 yrs)

How do you travel to your holiday destination? By scooter, by bike, by plane or in a camper van? Perhaps you have travelled by boat! Together in our workshop we will look at all of these different vehicles and construct a group map all together, using construction materials to represent far-away lands from our imagination. We will use collage, drawing, glue and junk modelling materials to create our exciting landscape, and together we will decide how we get there!

There is an exhibition on at the British Museum throughout the summer, all about Ancient India. Inspired by this fantastic exhibition, we will look together at the incredible Indian Elephant! Elephants have always been highly revered and treasured in Indian culture. We will paint one on a fabric bag and decorate it with patterns inspired by Indian printing. You can take your bag home and fill it with your own treasures!

Origami Cranes & Crafty Decorations (6-12 yrs)

Dive into the colourful world of Japanese paper craft in this fun and hands-on origami workshop! You’ll learn how to fold the iconic origami crane — a symbol of peace, love, health, and good luck in Japanese culture. Then, we’ll explore creative ways to turn your creations into special greeting cards, garlands, and even your own fairy light decorations. You’ll be guided step by step and practise your folding skills throughout the day, discovering how simple paper can be transformed into beautiful, meaningful creations. There’s plenty of room to express your creativity while learning origami basics and techniques. Origami helps build focus and calm — and it’s fun too! By the end of the day, you’ll take home handmade crafts to treasure or gift to someone special. The Conservatoire are delighted to be working for the first time with local artist Yukako Shibata. Yukako was born in Hokkaido, Japan, and has lived and worked in London since 1993. Yukako holds an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art. She has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows across the UK, Canada, Germany, and Japan. Her work is held in many public and private collections worldwide, including those of Doris Lockhart Saatchi, The Tim Sayer Collection (bequeathed to Hepworth, Wakefield), Crédit Agricole Corporate & Investment Bank, Braintree District Council, Poplar HARCA, and the Royal College of Art Collection.

How do you think Bluey got her name? Come along to this class inspired by the popular Australian show 'Bluey', created by Joe Brumm and Ludo Studio. In this all-day creative session, young artists will learn how to paint London landscapes and skylines — like Greenwich Park, the City, and famous landmarks—on clear glass using safe, non-toxic acrylic paints. ‘Hello Red Fox’ is a book by Eric Carle, and it teaches children all about contrasting colours through the use of simple techniques. Wild Weaving (4-7 yrs)

Did you know that the branches from the trees all around you can be used to make things? People weave all sorts of things; baskets, fences… even houses! Together in this class we will weave some beautiful art. Using a branch shaped like a divining rod (like people use to find water!) we will make a stick loom. We’ll use wool, grasses, and other natural objects to weave our art on our loom. Let's have a look at the famous hungry caterpillar- they wove their way in and out of different fruits, cherry pies and even a lollipop!

Draw, Paint, Sow & Grow (5-11 yrs)

This promises to be a fun-packed workshop, where we explore gardens with our pens and paintbrush, before getting our hands in soil to sow some seeds and propagate a plant. We start in the Conservatoire Garden, learning how to draw plants from observation before painting mini gardens onto pots. We will fill our pots with soil and sow some seeds and plants. Finally have some fun creating plant characters with their own story for a joyful finale. Skills explored include drawing from observation and imagination, gaining gardening knowledge and delighting in storytelling. You’ll leave with a new plant to look after and instructions of how to keep it alive. Weather dependent, plans may change slightly if it rains!

You can grow so many vegetables on our green planet! We will be looking at the work of Miroco Machiko, a young Japanese artist, in this fun afternoon workshop. Mixed Media & Printing: Summer Landscapes (5-11 yrs)

Join us at the Conservatoire for a packed day of art! In this workshop, you will explore two different processes with your tutor Florence. Students will spend the morning making mixed media collages to create a Summer Landscape inspired by a number of artists. In the afternoon they will learn a print technique called mono painting, and we will use photocopies of the work created in the morning to create mono paintings. Each participant will end the day having practiced two new creative skills and with two developed pieces of art to show for their hard work!

Sculpt Our Environment (5-11 yrs)

Do you like to make things with your hands? This is the class for you. Plants come in all crazy shapes and sizes, we will be inspired by some of the most architectural plant structures on the planet. Know your Monkey Puzzle Tree from your Bird of Paradise. We will start by exploring these shapes with our pencils before creating sculptures based on these wild and wonderful shapes. We’ll make botanical mobiles exploring a multitude of shapes and colours, press found materials from nature into clay, use our architectural plant drawings and assemble a hanging decoration. Finish by making a clay pot with plants and nature in mind, putting the learnings of the day into practice and coming away with a cute botanical inspired pot to finish painting at home. You’ll come away with a botanical mobile and/or small hand built botanical clay pot. Before the class, go on a walk in the garden, green space or beach and collect some interesting shapes on textures, this could be leaves, shells, sticks, seeds. Bring them along!

In this fun all-day art class at the Conservatoire you will create your very own ‘green planet’ themed artwork using scrap and recycled card, all inspired by the work of Henri Matisse. You will practise your observational drawing skills, using pencils and watercolours to draw from themed still lifes. Let's explore the forest floor! We will start our art-filled day with with observational drawing of flowers. We will develop 3D tropical plant forms combining printing , painting and construction methods. But how do we make these attractive to important pollinators? We will explore ways to make bees to feed on our colourful flowers. As well as our insect friends, we will look at other animals that hide in the undergrowth such as lizards, hedgehogs and mice... using recycled socks, fabric, glue and thread, we will create our own animal puppets!

Using the famous illustrations by William Blake of the River Thames, we’ll create posters to promote London, recreating iconic streets and buildings to our own design. The National Gallery in Trafalgar Square has been rehung and renovated to celebrate its 200th year this year. With great reviews, it has been hailed as ‘A momentous retelling Of The Story Of Art’. How would you tell the story of art? Which pieces from the NG would you give lots of space to stand and stare? We will make our own gallery in a shoe box and curate our own hanging. Maybe we can sneak in one or two of our own paintings to hang up among the classics?

London has been named the greenest city in Europe! The number of gardens, parks and green spaces is huge, and inspired by these we will use chalk pastels we can draw a secret garden. We’ll paint using bright colours, botanical shapes and blending inks. We will look at the work of Henri Rousseau for inspiration, as well as thinking of our own favourite London gardens.

Screenprinting in the City (5-11 yrs)

Learn the process of screen printing, from drawing up your own design to using a silk screen to transfer it onto paper and fabric. Create your own London inspired graphics, from iconic landmarks to green spaces and wildlife which you will turn into posters, as well as transfer onto a tote bag and t-shirt. There will be plenty of things to show off about our beautiful city!

We will make a city out of folded paper. Looking at the artist Hunderswasser, and his brightly coloured and decorated buildings, we will brighten up London. We can make some buses, trains and maybe even a tram to move around the city.

Making My House (4-7 yrs)

This summer, Do Ho Suh has an exhibition at Tate Modern in London, called 'Walk The House'. His work explores spaces - the Exhibition has reconstructions of houses in which he has lived, and explores memory and migration. He uses lots of different materials, as we will in this workshop. Coloured acetates will separate spaces, and we can create some wood effects using rubbings, wax resist and printing and use these to make our own mini houses. Will you create your own house, or will you create a brand new one?

Sketching London's Landmarks (5-11 yrs)

Spread out and scale up! London has one of the most famous skylines in the world. Draw our city and its landmarks on a vast mural as we fill up the studio with our big roll of paper. What landmark will you include? We'll use drawing, painting and collage to cover our large surfaces and depict the dense and vibrant city we live in. Where would you put this mural up so that the whole city could see it?

Chalk & Trees (4-7 yrs)

Using chalk pastels, we will explore and discuss the shapes of trees, and learn how to use perspective to create a picture of a view of trees, maybe in your garden, or in Greenwich park. Working with chalk pastels we will find out how to smudge and soften them, or draw sharper lines with this versatile medium.

Clay Mudlarking on the Thames (5-11 yrs)

During this all-day clay course we will take an imaginary journey exploring the foreshore of the ancient River Thames, 'mudlarking' as we go... this means looking for treasures in the river mud! Using air drying clay and other materials, we will make our own discovery box of found treasures encapsulating the rich history of London, from Roman pots, to mediaeval coins, to Victorian jewellery. We will end the day making a treasure map of London with our new ‘discoveries’ marked on it. What will you find?

Come along to this half-day art class at the Conservatoire to continue your crafty day inspired by J. M. W. Turner, an English Romantic painter, printmaker and watercolourist. In this art class you’ll cover many disciplines, including designing and creating your own t-shirt, inspired by London landmarks and the works of Turner. You’ll create your very own collaged sketchbook or journal, perfect for detailing your adventures in the capital. Finally, you’ll create your own London riverscape postcard, using pencils and watercolour – send your creation to a friend over the summer! Join us in the morning too for a full day of arts and crafts.

Making a Mini Theatre (5-11 yrs)

London's theatre district and West End is world famous. In this all-day art class we will depict London's array of dazzling theatres as we create our own mini theatre sets and puppets out of cardboard, paper, paint and glue. From the dazzling gold leaf of Theatre Royal, Drury Lane (the oldest theatre in town) to the concrete blocks of the National Theatre, we'll explore our different settings and the different stories that get told on their stages. What story of London will you tell and what theatre will you be inspired by? Take your mini theatre home to give your friends and family a puppet show.

Let's get weaving! Come along to the Conservatoire for a day full of fabric fun... we will construct colourful, intricate woven pieces using yarn and fabric inspired by the brand-new London Overground Weaver Line. The pieces you create can be decoratively displayed on your wall or used practically. Maybe you’ll take home a beautiful wall-hanging, mini rug or woven bowl!
